AIBA World Boxing Championship was kicked off on Monday, Oct. 13, in Alma-Aty, a former capital of Kazakhstan, one of the sport’s leading amateur boxing nations. As is a usual case for post-Olympics world championships, this one is missed by a number of notable operators. The most striking example of this sort is Team Ukraine, being badly weakened and even almost decapitated by the absence of almost all of its leaders, including 2012 London gold medalists Vasyl Lomachenko and Alexander Usyk, as well as such notables as Evgueny Khytrov, Taras Shelestyuk, Olexander Gvozdyk and Denis Berinchik.
As the tournament has been slowly heating up in the first four days, when all of the preliminary fights have been staged, the Ukrainian national team was one of the sorest underachievers, losing 3 of 4 members, who were brought into the ring during the 1st stage. Vadym Kudriakov lost to Belik Galanov in another of heated Russia vs. Ukraine fraternal rivalries. However, the most striking upset came of the hands of another ex-Soviet in Russian expatriate to Israel Igor Lazarev, who has sensationally knocked out capable light welterweight Vyacheslav Kislitsin in one. The partial redemption for Ukraine was achieved by another Lazarev – Denis, who has stopped his Belarussian opponent one weight heavier in two. It was spoilt, however, by yet another loss in heavyweight Arsen Azizov, who was excluded from the official roster due to organizational problems. [Click Here To Read More]
