Very tough fight to call. I've watched a hell of a lot more of Toney than I have of Hopkins, but my gut says this would be a phone booth war and I do not know how exciting it would be. I'll go out on a limb and say Hopkins would throw more punches and rattle Toney once or twice to eke out a split decision win. Both of these guys had/have phenomenal chins so there would be no knock out.

Hopkinds purely on his boxing ability, James Toney was beastly in close, as was Hopkins but he struggled against movement. This is why I hate when people compare James Toney to Floyd or Hopkins when it came to skill set, Toney couldn't box like them. You can say he was a better combination puncher, better in close but he couldn't stick and move the way those two could. From in close he can quickly go into different angles and I'm not necessarily saying he's slow on his feet, of course not, I'm saying he didn't like to chase his opponents down and what hurt him most is that he would take 20-30 seconds off. A prime Hopkins was better conditioned, never got tired and insanely active as well...gotta go with B-Hop here.

ugly fight, both wont land much of anything. i would go for toney since his won alot of fights not really in shape, where hopkins is well known for being in shape. if toneys in shape i think he beats hopkins. and i dont agree that toney has worse footwork than mayweather or hopkins, its just that he doesnt need to use footwork as much because his head movement and countering skillls are better.

I'm not talking about his footwork in the style he operates, I'm saying he can't stick and move the way Hopkins and Mayweather could. In close he's actually better than the two, the way he's able to turn his opponents in close is exceptional but against Hopkins, he'll be forced to chase Hopkins which Toney never liked to do and he'll have to be active for every minute of every round because Hopkins in his prime never stopped moving his hands. It'll be Hopkins sticking the jab in Toney's face whilst holding his own on the inside.

I'm pretty much repeating what I just said in post 6

Just because he didn’t like doing it, doesn’t mean he wouldn’t do it. When Toney is in shape he has some incredible stamina. I don’t think Hopkins moved better around the ring then Nunn, and Toney showed in that fight the ability to cut the ring, move his head, roll with punches and counter all night. Toney is one of those god gifted fighters. To beat Toney you not only have to be able to move around the ring well, but you have to throw combination punches from plenty of angles all night. I can see Hopkins being hurt in this fight as well due to Toney hitting him with shots he wouldn’t see. Hopkins has a great chin, but no where near the level of Toney’s chin. Toney is the all around much better fighter I see no advantages Hopkins would have in this fight.
