Comments Thread For: Gonzalez-Mares Rematch Appears To Be 2014 Bound

According to trainer Nacho Beristain, it would take a miracle for WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez to defend his belt against Abner Mares in the coming months. Nacho indicates that there is not enough time to put the rematch together and get properly prepared for it. Gonzalez will likely, according to Nacho, defend his title in late November or December.

"It seems that there is no time to have a rematch [in 2013], but instead we'll do it in 2014. We expect Johnny to fight before the end of the year in Mexico, and then we can make that fight [with Mares] because the people want to see the second fight," said Nacho.

I don't understand why there is enough time for some other fight in Mexico but not for the rematch with Mares, when Mares asked for it immediately following the loss. Hopefully they will set a date soon, can't wait for this rematch it should be a great one. I think Mares can beat Gonzalez with his superior boxing skills if he uses them and takes his time.

I hope Mares can come back strong and beat Gonzalez. I still don't know what to say about the style matchup. Didn't really get to see enough in the first fight

I'm picking Jhonny in the rematch. I think hey may have Abners number. Props to Abner though, very easy guy to like outside of the ring

Can we even say mares has superior boxing skills definitively? Gonzalez is a very good boxer-puncher.

Naco did the right thing -- both for his boxer to date and for his former boxer...
(There are sanctioning bodies which do not allow immediate rematches when one fighter is coming from a KO...)

It's probably easier to set up a small show in Mexico with a no hoper.
