Comments Thread For: Jamie McDonnell representative claims split with Hobson

Terry Moran, representing Paul Crowley & Co. Solicitors, has issued a statement on behalf of Jamie McDonnell claiming that the IBF bantamweight titlist has split from long-time promoter and mentor Dennis Hobson, who guided his charge to a world title shot against Julio Ceja at Doncaster’s Deepmoat Stadium despite a lack of regular TV dates or a long-term TV deal.

McDonnell, 21-2-1 (9), beat Ceja by majority decision in May and looked set to make his first defence of the belt live on BoxNation after Hobson sealed a deal with Queensberry Promotions last week, which brought with it the backing of BoxNation, the U.K.’s only dedicated subscription boxing channel. This is one of the problems that comes with having Matchroom as the only promoters on sky. Apparently Hobson lost a lot of money getting McDonnell that title shot and now he's not going to be able to get any of it back.

Hobson has done everything right by this kid. Pretty shady if you ask me. Fighters are getting worse at biting the hand that feeds them. As someone else said, Hearn's monopoly is having this kind of effect. Murray will be the next to ditch Hatton, though to be fair, considering what happened with the Quillan fight falling through because of the Hatton CEO's ineptitutde, I wouldn't blame him.
