Ali rode the hell out of the neck in a lot of fights. Difference was he had foes who often knew what to try to do against it and the fights with Frazier and Foreman were still great fights. Povetkins problem is that while he can box, he lacks some schooling on nasty old fighting. It's reflective of a still ongoing transition in parts of the world where often the best trainers were Olympic focused.

Anyway I am doing a cumpuclinch.

I have watched the first 4 rounds and the fight is much much better than I remembered. Boy did these two matchup perfectly.

            My count so far:

            R1: 12

            R2: 6

            R3: 13

            R4: 12

I am taking a break now as I have things to do, but I really look forward to see the rest of it.
Here we go again with this rather negative way of watching a fight.

R5: 13. Frazier is beginning to get more into this fight scoring with some wicked ribcrunching hooks.

            R6: 10

            R7: 14

R8: 11. Ali is tiring. Even Cosell thinks Ali is Holding a lot. Frazier scored big in this round.

R9: 13. That was a great round! Not only for clinching lol. I must say that referee Tony Perez is a real clinching mans referee. He separates the fighters ASAP, so they can get time to clinch again quickly.

R10: 14. Ali was hurt in this round. As far as clinching, and that's of course what this is about, they all follow the same pattern where Ali grabs Frazier around the head and locks him.

            R11: 13.

            R12: 13.

Wauw! That was a terrific fight. Much better than what I recalled.

Lets look at the clinchcount: 12+6+13+12+13+10+14+11+13+14+13+13 = 144.

            A barnburner of a clinchfest!

With 144 clinches the fight was still exciting. Why? You saw two highly skilled fighters who actually threw a variety of punches and combinations frequently from round to round.

Compare that with Grabimir throwing a jab and proceding to headlock pov. Then rince and repeat.

The difference is night and day.

So the numbers for Ali-Frazier is lower by some 40 clinches than Wlad-Povetkin. Perez did what he could to maximize the clinchcount by sometimes separating the fighters even though Frazier was working Ali's midsection.

Perez was clearly a clinchingmans referee.

Difference was primarily that Ali was willing to Trade at midrange and Frazier didn't Care if he should take 3 punches if he could just get close enough to land a big hook. Furthermore Frazier was great at trapping Ali and Ali fired some incredible combinations in a variety nobody can compete with.

One thing I noticed in the 2nd fight is Frazier abandoned the jab he used to close the distance in their first encounter.

I noted that Frazier's best punch was a right hand that had Ali on rubber legs.
