Clinching IS illegal in Boxing. Take a look at fights from 15+ years ago; guys would be DQd and have points deducted on the regular. I was watching and old James Tony fight on FSN yesterday, and the first time the opponent clinches hes given a soft warning while the action continues, and when he does it the second time he loses a point.
A guy clinching to hold himself up because he's hurt if one thing; the ref just needs to break them, but clinching to stop a guy from throwing punches is illegal in this sport.
Imagine if a boxer couldnt hold or clinch it its an automatic point deduction
.
But then we wouldn't have superstars like BH and Floyd mayweather.
When SSM got a punch on Floyd, he couldn't ko him, as Floyd automatically got hold of his arm in vice grip.
I don't even care about the number of clinches specifically. It annoys me the most when fighters clinch at very crucial moments for the opponents. Some fighters are good enough on their feet to avoid needing to clinch for most of the fight and it's very hard to trap them on the ropes. But in the few times the opponent does trap them after a ton of hard work of chasing them around, nothing pisses me off more than when a clinch is initiated in that very crucial moment. Only way to get any work done is by getting on the inside, but that's easily negated by a clinch. I just want throw the remote at the tv. Even if it's only done like 3 times a round, that's still excessive for me because it ruins any chance the opponent had to win the fight.
If you're a crappy on the inside when trapped on the ropes, you should either fight your way out and move the **** out of the way. Clinching is so cheap.
I understand holding on for dear life when you are hurt, but holding on because you don't want to get hit ruins fights. With either the rules should be applied once it becomes frequent even if it is the star that is doing it.
