  • Best 24/7 Performances of All-Time

Timothy Bradley's latest appearance on 24/7 is making for some compelling television. His last two fights have given him and his team some rough edges, and the resultant psychological duress make him a fascinating character study.

It got me thinking: What are the greatest performances in 24/7 history?

A few notes are in line. First, I don't mean from a boxing standpoint, necessarily. Setting your favorite fighters or fights aside, evaluate the fighters as though they were strictly characters on a television show. Think of their respective backstories as part of the script -- an actor needs a good script to succeed, but a bad actor can mangle even the most-well written part. Second, this is not a lifetime achievement question. While considering previous appearances for the purpose of a character contrast is appropriate, I would like to basically consider each installment of 24/7 as separately as possible. Lastly, I would like to keep consideration restricted to fighters for the time being. We all know that the non-fighters bring the goods time in and time out. There is no question that Floyd Sr., Roger, Ruben Guerrero, etc. are the champions of the show.

I would have done a poll, but considering how many options there are, I would be afraid of arbitrarily shortening the list and finding that the preponderance of responses fell into the "other" category. So, it seems to me that an open-ended discussion is the best way to go about it.

If I may start, here are my top three:

    1. Juan Manuel Marquez (from the "Mayweather-Marquez" installment): A truly star-making performance. JMM made up for Mayweather's lackluster performance by, among other things, throwing boulders, running up mountains, waxing philosophical, and drinking his own urine.

    2. Antonio Margarito: You couldn't invent a better villain. He understood his role and drove that bad boy over the cliff. He was a ruthless figure, casting his shadow over the whole program, especially effective in light of Cotto's emotional performance, which was fantastic in its own right.

    3. Floyd Mayweather (from the "Mayweather-Ortiz" installment): After a while, Mayweather's schtick was growing stale. But this was his most understated and most fascinating turn. As extraordinary as Ortiz was, it was Mayweather who showed the subtle cracks in his character. Struggling to brush off the criminal charges facing him, his bizarre and obsessive devotion to 50 Cent (who can forget the scene in which Floyd explains the depth of his friendship and devotion while 50 casually eats ravioli) ... all signs that Floyd was coming apart on the inside. The fight was, in many ways, the perfect cap to a 24/7 that squared off two psychologically damaged men.

The Floyd vs Hatton build up was epic all around. They went back and forward on 24/7 and you could tell they both just didn't like each other by the time the weigh in came around. Hatton was a flawed fighter but was an entertaining guy.

Marquez drinking his own piss was the only exciting thing about him being on 24/7. As great as a fighter as he is, the guy is pretty boring on 24/7 imo
