I talked my parents into watching CBS when they showed Santa Cruz-Guevara and Cunningham-Adamak, and of course it was the most boring fight Santa Cruz has been in and Cunningham got robbed. They walked away saying, "See?"

the fights are definitely a part of it...nothing like seeing two top goons squaring up


the collisions, the skill level, the drama also add to the intrigue of that sport

it's true tho...think about it...almost everyone was upset and ashamed of the sport just last Saturday because of the Chavez bull****...some casuals probably said to themselves 'man **** this shady ass sport, im never watching again'


then here's the rest of us who, just as disgusted a week ago, going 'oh cool, boxing is on this Saturday'


we brush it off and wait for more crap lol

I don't think the powers that be care they are fine taking advantage of the current situation and they will be able to make something workout regardless


There is a lot of bull**** involved in boxing though, that is just how it is and there is really no way to make everyone happy with how the sport works. That is part of the appeal of the sport to me because it is very opinion oriented and it really makes you think, I like other sports also but the different between boxing and other sports is like the difference between blackjack and poker~. Other sports it is very rigid which is cool and if you follow a simple formula it is fairly easy to break even (as long as you follow the rules) but making money is hard, boxing on the other hand has endless opportunity as long as you are patient like in poker

I bet boxing does gain popularity going forward though (at least in America) because football has been fulfilling the baser instinct of pro sports fans but with what is going on in terms of brain injuries and how they are trying to limit contact I think that will turn off a lot of fans. Really the only place to replace that is the fight game where putting a hurting on someone is still the aim of the game

Yea if you can't deal with the bull**** and laugh it off you pretty much can't be a fan of boxing. In a way that bull**** has a charm though because you just never know what to expect in boxing something is always popping up.

It is hard to explain that to a non boxing fan though.

even when you can't laugh, there's something addicting about this sport...i sure as hell wasn't laughing as a kid when Leonard got the nod over Marvin or when they robbed Roy in Seoul..but i still had to tune in everytime it was on tv

Yea, it is hard to explain the charm to a non boxing fan because they will always say "but the right person doesn't always win" which is true.

Still for all those negative shocking moments I have to say boxing is by far the most unpredictable pro sport in a positive way, sometimes maybe most of the time you know what to expect like Molina-Smith was always going to be a boring fight but quite often fights take unexpected turns that you could never predict.

It is just so different than other sports, plus every other sport is tamping down on head injuries boxing they still reward giving the other guy a serious concussion.

Interesting idea, but I'm not sure I buy it. Let's say that boxing could be more generally popular and, at least, closer to the mainstream. Even if the sport's elites lose some control and opportunities to manipulate outcomes as they desire, I would guess that they would still want the sport to have a larger general audience. The additional revenue would likely outweigh the benefits of maintaining the current model. If there is anybody out there with a background in formal modeling (game theory, etc.), your input would be appreciated.
