Comments Thread For: Ricky Burns Begins The Road Back, Now Light Training

WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns has been given the green light to resume training after suffering a broken jaw.

The Coatbridge fighter reported progress in his recovery on his official Twitter account, less than four weeks after his injury in his latest title defence.

Burns underwent surgery to insert a titanium plate after Raymundo Beltran inflicted a clean break of the Scot's jaw early in their world title bout on September 7.

Burns wrote: "Was at hospital last week and jaw's getting there, can resume light training but still no boxing for a few weeks. Going nuts here! Haha"

One bad fight and you can put it down to things just not going well on the night.

Two bad fights in a row and the secrets out you're not all that.

Feast on bums and stay @ home Ricky. The moment you step up you'll get Lacy'd.

Burns (with his jaw broken early) should have quit -- but Highlanders never quit... Unfortunately is likely that Burns will never fight again at a top level...

What a ****** comment. Answer me something, why does Gonzalez get NO CREDIT WHATSOEVER for his performance in that fight? It would have troubled almost anyone else in the division: he's awkward, was in phenomenal physical shape, and was the unbeaten number one contender. Moreover, Burns had endured two failed training camps in the 8 month period since his previous fight, so it's pretty clear he was somewhat overtrained. Nevertheless, he dug deep, grit his teeth and broke Chelo's heart.

As for Beltran, the broken jaw was obviously his downfall. Had it not happened, I think Ricky would have won and won handily. When he had Beltran at range, it looked an easy fight. Obviously with the jaw broken, he was seriously affected. Whatever, though, again it's this kind of sneering criticism that peeves me. "Feast on bums". Was Katsidis a bum? Kevin Mitchell? Paulus Moses? Rocky Martinez? All good, quality fighters, as was Gonzalez and as is Beltran. Writing off Burns after two gruelling fights, one against an unbeaten Puerto Rican no1 contender, one against a fiercely determined Beltran, and with a CLEANLY BROKEN JAW, shows what kind of shallow fan/pundit you are.

It's a good thing he ducked Broner. Twice.

Well they're going to offer Beltran the rematch. Matchroom have already contacted Top Rank about the fight.

Yeah Ricky's lucky, just look at Malignaggi, Broner destroyed him, he's lucky to still be alive.

Malignaggi is a welterweight. Broner had to move up 2 whole weight classes since Burns didn't want any.

But it was a smart move by Ricky. If Beltran and Gonzales gave him trouble you can just imagine what The Problem would have done to him. This way he at least got to stay champion for a while.

... And Broner has to move down some 5 or 6 whole weight divisions -- because he's a midget cruiserweight right now...
