DETROIT: Kronk gym to remain open for training, tours
Even though the City of Detroit has officially closed the famed Kronk Boxing Gym as part of budget cuts, the center remains open for boxing training and the public will be able to watch during Super Bowl week.
The city, with the help of the Emanuel Steward Foundation, will open the gym at 5555 McGraw near Junction from Monday through Feb. 4, so the public can take free tours of the city's oldest recreation center and see professional boxers train from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and amateurs from 3:30 to 6 p.m.
For more information, call 313-224-1862.
Trainer Emanuel Steward's foundation will hold a fund-raiser for the center.
The event, which is to start at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 2 at the Fisher Building and feature pro and amateur fights, is expected to draw some of the biggest names in Hollywood and boxing.
