Of course his nickname wouldnt be Canelo, but would he be a star? There is really nothing special about the guy, he has mediocre boxing skills at best, and Ive asked several women in my family (all Latinas) if he is good looking and they say no. I think his hype is that hes a red headed Mexican. Hell, power 106 (Los Angeles) went around asking people before "the one" what Alvarez's first name was and no one knew, everyone thought it was Canelo, and supposedly these were all Saul Alvarez fans.
If Saul Alvarez didnt have red hair?...

I am Mexican and to answer the question no he would not be a star IMO but the man is on T.V all the time in Mexico with the distinctive red hair and smile and he does have charisma and was an unbeaten Boxing champion in a boxing crazy country so all of those factors made for the perfect storm.
But make no mistake about it the kid CAN FIGHT, so lets wait and see what the kid does in his career before we be too harsh on him, and remember he did come out of no where and did not have the Chavez name to help him he just had the look.
Can't be mad at that.Comment

he'd still be. you actually think he's gotten all of this attention because of his red hair? he's a good looking charismatic mexican kid with talent and a shiny record. he was bound get hype.Comment

No he wouldn't, I've been saying this for along time. If Alvarez was of darker complexion and had black hair, he wouldn't be where he is today. The red hair and freckles makes him a rarity, sort of like a unicorn, sad that's what his mass appeals stems at.Comment

I totally agree with you. I was reading a news article the other day saying that darker skinned Mexicans are discriminated against in Mexico, so much that they have anti-discrimination groups in Mexico I guess equivalent to the NAACP. Id laugh my @$$ off if they put Canelo against Molina and Molina wrestles to victory. Hell I think Molina woulda landed more on Floyd.Comment

It could, I always thought he was to muscular for a boxer. I am no fan of Margarito but if Canelo spent a training camp next with him, his stamina would be in check.Comment
