At the end of the day, the general public wants to see competitive fights. That's how you fill seats and make money. They want to see 2 guys going to war.

If Khan gets the next Mayweather fight without beating Alexander or another top welterweight then it would sure look like only money matters. If Khan goes straight to a fight with Mayweather in May that would mean he "earned" this fight by barely beating an unranked mediocre Diaz in England at a top weight of 143. If things were fair Mayweather should fight the Alexander-Khan fight winner even if the winner is Alexander. Even more fair would be for Khan to have to earn a shot at any welterweight champ by beating a high ranked welterweight first. Garcia could fight Alexander for his welterweight title and the winner fights Mayweather in May. Let Khan earn a shot at a welterweight title and then fight Mayweather if he keeps winning. Khan gets fights on a silver platter without earning them because he is a very popular fighter in the UK and he brings lots of money to the table. It's not fair but that's the way it is.

This is the case, almost every time a past prime fighter or ex-champ is used to pad another fighter's record. The better mic skills these ex-champs have the more fights they get, for example, Ricardo Mayorga and Zab Judah. But really, the perceived or the illusion of a challenge sells fight.

If you can't sell yourself then you're of no use to the promoters or networks regardless of how good u are.

Take Mayorga for example. He's headlined a handful of ppv events yet Andre Ward can't sell out a circus tent outside of Oakland.
