Comments Thread For: Marquez: The Weight, Lack of Game Plan Hurt Canelo

Former four division world champion Juan Manuel Marquez felt the catch-weight of 152-pounds was damaging to Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, who dropped a lopsided twelve round decision to Floyd Mayweather Jr. last Saturday night at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. Canelo made the weight and reportedly blew up to 165-pounds on the night of the fight. Some believe Canelo weighed close to 170 when he entered against Mayweather, and that made the Mexican star even slower.

Floyd was a masterclass at avoiding his opponent all night and got the odd slappy shot in. No way it was a convincing win. A draw would easily have been the right decision.

Doesn't matter about the game plan, Floyd will dance around, pot shot and pick apart any fighter with average hand speed and footwork. You have to have fast hands and feet to even have a bit of success against Floyd like Ortiz and Judah did.

He didn't KO Canelo, true. But he outclassed the kid, who maybe took one round tops.

Fight should have been at 154lbs and the corner was ok but Canelo needs Nacho is his corner..

It wasn't a beat down at all, it was more like Olympic boxing, just connect to rack up points.

I'd like to see Canelo vs Cotto next
