Comments Thread For: Upset: Kulikauskis Strikes Again, Shocks Kalenga

With a record of just 12-18-3, 6 KOs, it's hard to believe Arturs Kulikauskis is worth of any notion. Yet, the hard-luck Latvian journeyman just keeps bringing his name into the headlines and for the right reasons. Yesterday, the 22-year old Latvian upset master did it again, scoring a stunning upset over WBA #8 rated cruiserweight Youri Kayembre Kalenga, the first loss in the France-based Congolese's career. Official scores were: 100-93, 100-94 and 99-97, and Kalenga (now 16-1, 10 KOs) was reportedly deducted a point in round one for hitting at the back of the head. The fight was arranged at the Kipsala Exhibition Centre in Riga, Latvia.

This is odd, an undefeated French contender fights a Latvian journeyman in Latvia, and loses a UD.

        Dear readers!
I am a Latvian citizen and despite my citizenship I am disgusted by this decision. I attended the fight and here's my view of the fight:
The Latvian took a real beating from Kalenga through 10 rounds. Kulikauskis answered every fifth or tenth punch at most. It was clearly a one-sided beating. However, I must acknowledge that Kilikauskis has an iron chin, he simply refused to fall to the canvas. I expected that Kalenga would win by a huge margin and to my surprise they raised Latvian's hand at the end of the fight. Such decisions are a disgrace to boxing. Oh, and btw, all the judges were Latvians. I hope the fight will be available online so you can verify my words.
