Response to the notion of there being a lucky punch.

I was browsing reddit not too long ago and came across a thread that was titled "Is the boxing narrative of "a lucky punch" true in some cases or just a myth." The first response was great! He defines the term "luck", then gives a great example lol.

    "From Wikipedia:
[Luck or chance is an event which occurs beyond one's control, without regard to one's will, intention, or desired result.]

A lucky punch would be a mugger sneaking up behind you about to stab you and **** your girlfriend, meanwhile you're telling her about a fish you caught one time and as you spread your arms you catch the would be mugger square on the jaw and lay him out.
In boxing, every punch is intended to hurt the other guy. I would never use the term "lucky" in boxing."

    Thoughts?

Good Idea. I think of a lucky punch as "you are getting your ass beat until you throw an unplanned punch and manage to stop the guy in his tracks".

Obviously it isn't just luck but it would be the same as catching a football in the endzone from really far away or something like that.

How would we know if the punch is unplanned or not?

There is no such thing as luck in boxing. I once heard this saying in reference to that:

"Luck is when opportunity meets preparation"

If i fought pac 10x i would never get as "lucky" as marquez did. Why? Because while i got the opportunity i would probably never be properly prepared because i am not a pro fighter.

When the purpose of a sport is to punch the other guy, it feels dumb to call a punch lucky.

Well I guess we couldn't, every punch is kind of planned, but sometimes you don't expect the guy to be knocked unconscious for a few minutes lol

Ok......but there are times when fighters are hopelessly down on the cards and have been fortunate enough to have caught an opponent with an effective shot and score a ko.

eyes, mind and soul completely focused on my target, i crushed the wrapper in my hand, took my freethrow stance, *i can do this i told myself*, having missed it the previous 5 tries as i go to throw, i get nudged, *sht, i thought* wrapper gone airborne, my sister, the twat wasn't looking where she was walking....but wait, although the trajectory is way off...it hits the wall, it hits the microwave, hits the washing machine and...AND.... OH MY GAWD I DID IT!

No punches are lucky. They are thrown with the intention of hurting the opponent. If they do so, they have accomplished their goal.

In a lot of those scenarios, the guy winning comfortably gets careless. No luck involved.
