Comments Thread For: Paul Smith to defend British title against Luke Blackledge

The BBBoC have confirmed that Paul Smith will defend his British Super middleweight title against Luke Blackledge. Smith won the belt by beating Tony Dodson courtesy of a sixth-round TKO at the Bolton Arena in June, should he beat Blackledge he will own the Lonsdale belt outright.

'The Stewards decided to approve a request by Promoter Frank Warren for the above voluntary defence contest to take place on a date and at a venue as yet to be advised,' stated the BBBoC when confirming the bout, which will see Blackledge, 13-1-2 (5), contest the prestigious title for the first time. It's not ironic that the challenger is trained by Kevin Maree. Not at all. It could be called coincidental. But there's not irony in the fact.

What is it with writers these days not learning English?

Mr Dooley, go to your room and study.

    Apart from this, nice work.

Hello, thanks for the English lesson, but I think you may have got things twisted a little bit. Is it really that coincidental that Blackledge, who is based in Clitheroe, is trained by Kevin Maree, a professional trainer who is based out of a gym in Clitheroe? I'd say no. There's no such thing as coincidence.

Is it ironic that Anderson won the belt once held by Smith, then was mooted to defend it against Smigga at some point this year, only for Anderson to vacate leaving free to fight for the belt against a former opponent, Dodson, who was seen as out of the reckoning. Smith then makes his first defence against Blackledge, a gym mate of Anderson who has been desperate for a title shot and recognition and now gets it due to the circumstances and things happening in a way that's almost the opposite of how they should have transpired? Dramatic irony tends to be caused by the unseen aspects of an action, Anderson's decision to vacate, that later pop up again and cause a situation that is incongruous to how it should have turned out, Maree's next experience of the title he won with Maree coming through a challenge via Blackledge. There's irony to this situation, but no coincidence.
