The big gloves are the reason why boxing has lost its excitement.
It has made it possible for fighters to basically have a defense that is impenetrable and leading to less knockouts and safer play.
Its bad from both the defensive and offensive fighting. For defense you can close your guard and that's it, for offensive you cant get great shots in because you have pillows in your hands.
Just imagine how many boring and less talented boxes have been able to dominate this sport because of the gloves. For instance you have a zombie like Vitali Klitschko who is using the same combination for 12 rounds and using his size advantage to smoother his opponents to death.
Now the big gloves don't play any role in Vitali defense, but they play a role in screwing the smaller opponents he is fighting. They cant get great shots in with pillows for hands.
Just imagine a prime Mike Tyson with smaller gloves. He would close the distance on that big zombie and lay him out with a brutal double hook combo.
Make the gloves smaller, give different styles a chance. Instead of forcing boxing to be all about distance, timing, and straight shots, make it more about viciousness. You will get boxes who will have such furious attacks that their lanky technical opponents cannot overcome by simply raising their pillows and weathering the storm.
Big gloves favor stylistic fighters like Muhammed Ali and completely disfavor stylistic fighters like Joe Frazier.
