Floyd Mayweather had barely learned who the referee would be for his Sept. 14 pay-per-view fight with Canelo Alvarez when he was asked his opinion of the assigned third man in the ring.

"Kenny Bayless is a great referee,” Mayweather said on a Sept. 4 media conference call held just hours after the Nevada State Athletic Commission picked officials for the upcoming show. “He’s fair. I think he’s going to let us fight. A lot of times you got refs who’s always breaking the action up. KB is one guy, he’s not for the bull****. He likes to treat every fighter fair.”

Bayless has been the referee for three of Mayweather’s previous fights, according to BoxRec.com. That website shows Bayless as being the ref for his win over Shane Mosley in 2010, his win over Oscar De La Hoya in 2007, and in his pro debut victory in 1996 over Roberto Apodaca. He has not worked any of Alvarez’s fights.

The other candidates to be the third man in the ring for that bout were Robert Byrd, Jay Nady and Tony Weeks.
