AT the risk of getting stoned to death or skinned alive, may I ask when will we get tired giving Manny Pacquiao ticker tape parades?
I mean if we’re going to do this everytime our boxing hero comes home from a fight, we might as well institutionalize this and mark one day of the year as a special Pacquiao holiday.
This way, there would be less traffic and inconvenience, and give Pacquiao enough time to prepare for the day-long festivities.
Oh, yes, let’s make it a Friday, so we can have a long weekend. Holiday economics.
Counting yesterday, Pacquiao has been paraded on the streets five times since bringing down Mexican Marco Antonio Barrera three years ago.
Even during his loss to Morales last year, Pacquiao was still out on the streets.
I’m sure Pacquiao wouldn’t mind being placed on top of a slow-moving vehicle where he gets to smile and wave to adoring crowd. It’s also fine to bring him to Malacanang for picture-taking, autograph-signing and stuff.
But to keep him away from his family for nearly a day is asking too much.
Weary from travel and all, Pacquiao had to stay up last night to perform with other celebrities during the all-night party at Rajah Sulaiman Park.
Whew! Ten rounds with Erik Morales was easy compared to what Pacquiao went through yesterday.
What is amusing is how two giant television networks are squeezing every ounce of Pacquiao in the battle for ratings.
ABS-CBN scored a coup of sort when it teamed up with Solar Sports to bring the fight on the living rooms.
Not to be outdone, GMA 7 sent boxing man Chino Trinidad in Las Vegas to do commentary and send live feeds before, during and after Pacquiao’s fight with Morales.
The morning after his fight, Pacquiao was asked to sing live by ABS-CBN durings its Magandang Umaga Bayan program.
GMA 7 sneaked in a left uppercut during its 24 Oras newscast when it brought together Pacquiao’s estranged parents to kiss and make up on national television.
Give us a break, please.
If we are to put some meaning to yesterday’s celebration, all we have to do is heed Pacquiao’s simple wish -- a desire that he places over and above the fame and fortune he is enjoying.
Asked what his wish is, Pacquiao did not hesitate: Unity.
“Kung kailangan ako lumaban araw-araw para magkaisa tayo, gagawin ko,” Pacquiao said moments after stopping Morales last Sunday.
At the rate things are going, Pacquiao may have to fight until boxing gets out of style.
