Comments Thread For: Kiko Martinez on Title Win, Future, Mares' TKO Loss

BoxingScene.com caught up with newly crowned IBF super bantamweight champion Kiko Martinez (29-4, 21KOs) to discuss his upset title win over Jhonatan Romero, training for that fight, the future.

When you were in the locker room, did you have that feeling that you knew you would win the fight?

I knew that I had trained very hard - all the preparation had gone well. But if I told you that I knew I was going to win, I’d be lying to you. I thought that I was going to fight hard, start strong and that it would be a hard fight to win, with lots of blood and sweat.
I almost stopped him in the first round but his preparation helped him survive it. He took everything I had so I thought it would be a long fight, in truth. But thank God we slowly started breaking him down. [Click Here To Read More]

Hard to believe he's only 27. I thought he was more of an aging shop worn fighter for some reason.

It'll be a miracle if gets past Mathebula. If a Rigo fight actually pays well, I would just jump straight to that because he's going to lose his title eitherway.

I would much rather see a fight against Darchinian or Leo Santa Cruz though. Those could be fight of the year candidates.

He should take the Rigondeaux fight. It will be an HBO date and more money involved.

I think he has a year or so to defend against Mathebula.

I agree. I really liked what Martinez did and it creates a legit opponent for Rigo that should make fans turn in. Only problem is Martinez has no defense and Rigo is significantly better than Romero.
