Comments Thread For: Bomba Gonzalez Shocked as Top Rank Releases Him

Puerto Rican flyweight prospect Jonathan 'Bomba' Gonzalez (13-1, 11 KO's), whose only blemish on his professional record was in his last fight, on August 17, when he was knocked out in four rounds by two-time world champion Giovanni Segura, received a letter from Top Rank which advised him that he was being released from his promotional agreement.

"I'm young, I only 22 years old and I didn't think that would happen over losing a fight. Let's see what happens in this rest period. They sent me a letter telling me that I was released a few days over the loss," said Gonzalez who was ranked seventh at 112 pounds under the WBO.

Pobrecito, smart move by TR. Gonzalez is small for 112 and really isn't that good. I don't see him beating any top flyweights.

That's cold. He stepped up too quick and got knocked down. Let's see how he gets back up.

That's jacked up! But fighters can't drop their promoters like that without serious fines and legal issues. I for one thought Bomba had a chance to beat Segura, obviously I was wrong but he can bounce back.

Boxing is a business but this doesn't make business sense. La Bomba is a talented kid and a loss this early in his career at his young age means absolutely nothing at all. This is weird. Maybe Arum is going to concentrate on cultivating Asian fighters and doesn't have time for Ricans. This kid should sign with Golden Boy and seek training with Nacho Beristain.
