Comments Thread For: Gonzalez: If I Were Mares, I Wouldn't Do Fast Rematch

Jhonny González, the World Boxing Council (WBC) featherweight champion, has no problem with facing Abner Mares for a second time in a row, but doesn't think it's such a good idea. Last Saturday night in California, Gonzalez shocked the odds by scoring a first round knockout of Mares. There was a rematch clause, which Mares exercised a few days ago. The rematch should take place before the end of the year.

I believe he's genuinely concerned about his friend.

I'm fascinated by this, but at the same a bit worried. I hope we don't end up seeing a Salido-Lopez or Thompson-Price situation, in which a prime and undefeated Mares ends up shot to bits after 2 consecutive losses :conf3:

(OK, Lopez had one fight between each Salido loss, but still.)

mares is embarrassed by the loss rather then proving that he's a "warrior"

          he's embarrassed.

wrong move on his part. mares needs lots and lots of sparring & a soft touch (let him build up his confidence) going into this rematch without any of that all because he's embarrassed is just dumb..........

Sounds like he feels bad. Probably going to let him win the rematch Mitchell-Banks 2 style

Jhonny's right. Hes gonna go into the rematch knowing for a fact that he can KO Mares in one round and Mares knows he can get KO'd in one round which means hes gonna fight scared.

Mares's needs a better team around him advising him
