Comments Thread For: Gonzalez: I Saw Abner Mares Was Worried Before the Fight

WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (55-8, 47KOs) feels better than ever after knocking out Abner Mares (26-1-1, 14KOs) in the first round of Saturday's fight at the StubHub Center in Carson, California. Gonzalez had some personal problems, and an injury, before last year's decision loss to Daniel Ponce De Leon. He was convinced of victory after examining Mares' mannerisms at their final press conference. He says Mares looked worried and very timid.

Good observation by Gonzalez, on top of that imo Mares looked cold. Just an all around bad night for Mares. Gorgeous left hook by Gonzalez though, cong**** to him.

There is much to be said about seeing another fighter worrying a bit.

I think ALLLLLL should be looking at JR, I see little things that make me think he is a bit worried.

I see Canelo solid as a rock.

      AGAIN

IF Canelo will Jump on those Exits of Jrs and shut them down working the body and letting the head go he will get him

      if he don't

it will be another of Jrs outings, something that puts me to sleep.

YES jr is a great boxer but a lousy fighter,,not my cup of tea.

Fights like the Gonzalez Mares , Lucas Danny, Ruslan Alvarez , Pac Brandon etc........... are real fights to me.

While you jump down my throat , I loved Ali, but all the while he was dancing he was killin ya with great shots, NEVER POT SHOTS like the ballerina boy

What is it that you see that makes you think JR is a little bit worried? First off the key to Mayweather that everyone seems to be missing is that 1) he trains year round 2) he fights at his walking around weight 3) he is 36 going on 37 years of age - where people really need to be giving the man his props is that, you have to be on your A game because he sure as hell is not going to defeat himself, every fighter he has fought over the past 17 + years have been on their A game ! its like the bulls of the 90's, every game teams are coming at their head from the raptors to the lakers etc.. so what it is that you may think you see might actually be you reaching a little bit because cats like mayweather and Hopkins, they fight the best that their opponent can possibly be on fight night because their opponents recognize the opportunity in front of them - and here's a quote from Mosley during a press conference when he was going to fight Zab Judah, and zab was at the Mic talking about how he has rededicated himself to the sport, and he is eating better, and training more seriouse yad yada yada, Mosley took the Mic and said I hope you are doing these things because I have been living like this since from day 1, I have the discipline to do this for myself and my career - powerful stuff - that is the difference between Mayweather and 95% of his opponents, you might see him at the BET awards, all star weekend, super bowl weekend etc, but better believe he gets his daily run in and he will be hitting that gym for a couple of hours a day also, cats at his level don't have fear just anticipation.

Mares is not overhyped, stop bashing these fighters because they got beat. Gonzales is a tough fighter. Mares to me, just got careless and caught. If he would have held on I think he would have made it out of the round. Then who knows, But man how gracious he was in defeat speaks volumes. He will be back and he will learn from those mistakes ! With a resume like his, no he did not get exposed, stop hating .

I think the whole "I see fear in my opponent's eyes" is what's ridiculously over-hyped. If I had a dime for every time I've heard that -- and then the victory went to the 'scared' fighter, I'd be a happy camper. It's one of those things where by odds it's going to appear to have been valid every now & then -- and then people pile on it like they're going for a hayride.

Every thread doesn't have to be about Mayweather........just saying.

In regards to the thread topic, I have no doubt that Mares was nervous about facing his former coach and sparring partner. Gotta be hard preparing for a fight knowing that your opponent possibly knows every move you plan to make.
