    Jhonny, The Unsung Hero

It's interesting to see how much of an upset people believe Jhonny "EL Bombardero" Gonzalez has pulled after securing a dynamic victory over highly touted, Abner Mares. In reality Jhonny has had his fair share of up's and downs, with more of a decline after losing his now retained WBC strap to Daniel Ponce De Leon last Sept. 9, 2012.

Boasting an incredible record of 55 wins, 8 losses, 0 draws, and a staggering 47 ko's, was an indication of what was brewing. Jhonny was quite, hungry, and wanting to prove something to the people, but mostly... himself. With 4 forgettable early losses on his record and 4 losses and 4 defeats to elite pugilists, many writers did their job best and wrote Gonzalez off. Countless Ring Magazine experts had Abner over Jhonny in what many believed would be an easy night for a budding young star. Soon they would discover that much like the Mexican saying states, remains true. "Mas sabe el diable por viejo que por diablo."(The devil is wise due to experience rather than simply because of his title)

The bell rung for the first round and the first 2 minutes were uneventful. Abner seemed unfazed by the light flickers Jhonny was sending his way. Getting caught within the first 2 minutes but brushing it off. Abner seemed to be comfortable, but Jhonny seemed focused. Bouncing back and forth trying to line Mares up with a perfect shot, and so the moment came during the final minute of the first round. Those light flickers meta morphed into a vicious left hook that would ultimately decimate the Pound for Pound newcomer. The heart of Mares shined for a brief 10 seconds as he managed to get back on his feet. The ref cleared the air and hit reset on the fight, unleashing a tornado of condensed power that would have Mares swinging wildly against the ropes, and finally clashing back down to the canvas for a well deserved stoppage.

Once the ref waved it off, Jhonny's warm and caring heart was on display as he urgently rushed to Mares and checked if he was okay. Not only was our new champ graceful in victory but he also guided Mares through his first loss. Informing Mares that this was a minor stumble and that not only was this the beginning to his career, but that Jhonny himself also knew all about defeats.

Mares showed respect after gathering himself and made sure his two young daughters knew he was okay. Smiling and mentioning a field trip to his daughters in order to mask a brutal 1st blemish on his once nearly perfect record.

Fans are fickle, and Mares knows this. Unless he rematches and wins convincingly, many fans will jump off the bandwagon and write him off into the sunset. His rise has been hindered, but Mares has the heart of a warrior and will climb the steep mountain once again. He has always showed his willingness to face the best, and he always assured the fact that a loss was very conceivable. Now that it has arrived, a true champ is characterized by how much he wins, but also by the way he gets back up from a demoralizing defeat.

Jhonny and Nacho have proved once again that Knock Outs will silence all doubt. Jhonny is now on the verge of newfound glory with 2 decisions at hand, continue as he implied and move up or rematch Mares. Regardless of his decision Jhonny will be the unsung hero in the eyes of many. The underdog with more bite than bark, and the man to have ko'd a promising star at a time when he was in his prime, El Bombardero remains true to his alias once again.

I did think that was really a classy move by Jhonny, to come over and make sure Abner was OK before celebrating. You don't see too many fighters doing that.

Great post. I'm disappointed at the lack of respect Johnny has gotten after this KO.

And how about Nacho Bernstein? He's having one helluva run.

For sure. Nacho is such an amazing trainer. I wish Abner would have stayed with him for a bit longer. I remember Abner's style resembled Marquez back when he was under Nacho. Now? he seems to have lost that finesse and instead filled it up with rough, tough and scraping style that utilizes more ruggedness than anything technical.

Nacho also stated that he was in pain when he saw his once student on the canvas. He said it hurt him deeply because he cares for Mares alot, although they went their separate ways. I hope Mares can either improve his defense and work on his combination/boxer puncher skill, or switch trainers and work on a new game plan.
