Comments Thread For: Mares Not Worried About Sparring History With Gonzalez

Abner Mares and Jhonny Gonzalez will collide in a featherweight title fight on August 24 in Carson, California. However, it’s not the first time the two shared ring space.

The two were once sparring partners back when both were trained by Ignacio ‘Nacho’ Beristain. Gonzalez is still with the Hall of Fame trainer, but Mares moved on in 2009 and has since fought under the Espinoza Boxing Club banner.

Both fighters have enjoyed varying degrees of success since those days, but still recall their time spent together in past camps. Neither expects the element of familiarity to impact their forthcoming Showtime-televised main event. [Click Here To Read More]

    Mares

Abner Mares is a PRO. This sparring deal doesn't bother him in the least. Abner is a very smart, highly skilled boxer.

Nothing about Gonzalez should worry Mares.

If you're considered a "small featherweight" maybe you should consider being a jockey.

Mares will chop Gonzalez down. I like him by stoppage.

Mares is too much for him.

Mares will take on anyone, love that about him. Hope he stays at 126 for a little before moving up.

Mares is much better off the draw than Gonzalez. Gonzalez will go into a shell and quit like he always does.
