Have been watching a lot of their old fights recently and was interested in getting opinions on what you guys think of them and who do you think was best in their prime.
Benn, Eubank, Collins, Calzaghe- how do you rate them and who was best?

when exactly was calzaghe's prime again? if you say it was against lacy, kessler, and hopkins people say oh no he was 34, 35 then. if you say it's when he was beating rick thornberry, tocker pudwill, will mcintyre, mger mtchikian, etc...then lol!Comment

in terms of achievements over time -
1/2. Calzaghe - 20 defences of minor title but also capturing the other titles and wins at LH.
1/2. Eubank - lesser number of defences but higher level of opponents than Joe perhaps puts him on equal footing.
3. Benn - his style of fighter rarely have a long career anyway.
4. Collins -retired to early for a fully fledged career to be considered
in terms of one off peak achievements -
1. Benn (emphatically beating Gman is unequalled here) and mature performances later.
2. Eubank - several very decent opponents, all solid wins except Benn and Watson which were contentious.
3. Collins - clashed with all the best he could find, ducked no one, even if he didn't win them all.
4. Calzaghe - just Kessler and Reid stand out as prime and dangerous, weakened opponents generally elsewhere.
I think ability wise, I would need to watch more fights in order to decide.Last edited by DreamFighter; 08-18-2013, 05:22 PM.Comment

A 42 year old (175 lineal champ) Hopkins at the full 175 is better than a prime Kessler, Reid, Bika, etc. or Benn, Eubank, Collins for that matter.in terms of achievements over time -

it was barely a win, first of all, and completely classless.
And at 42, you can plan to beat him by outgassing him. He is vulnerable to the right strategy, as long as you can still be fresh enough to perform it after hes been schooling you earlier on. Its simple biology, the lungs have a limit at each age. But people are too ****** to do that, or just simply don't have the lungpower to commit to outworking him this way.
With eubank and kessler you need more than one plan, and prime focused reid is a pretty good opponent too with multiple strategems.Last edited by DreamFighter; 08-18-2013, 06:35 PM.Comment

Saw them all live! That's live not live. You know what I mean.
Eubank could have been the best but the Watson tragedy changed him & he was half the fighter after that. Well, not half the fighter, he was just a boxer doing enough to win rather than going for it.
Hard for me to put them in order. Benn had the best (& worst) win of them all. Benn was most exciting coming up. He was lucky to have had a great domestic scene to play off too.
Calzaghe obviously has the best statistical record but the huge gaps of class in his career count against him. He, perhaps like Floyd, would have been respected more had he taken tougher fights. Win or lose. Saying that, both he & Floyd stepped it up later on.
I watched Collins when he first returned to be based in the British Isles. On the undercard of a Benn fight. He boxed well in a dull fight. Then he evolved into this brawling caveman. And it was excellent. But he was smart about it. Not reckless. Ricky Burns is following him stylewise to a lesser extent.
I'm not putting them in order. I liked them all. Benn & Eubank were my personal favourites & I saw them in several fights on the way up & after they became champs.Comment
