Comments Thread For: Frank Warren: Kovalev Rematch Not in Immediate Plans

Nathan Cleverly's promoter Frank Warren was reluctant to discuss a rematch with Sergey Kovalev after seeing his fighter bludgeoned to defeat in four rounds.

Cleverly lost his WBO light-heavyweight title in Cardiff on Saturday night as powerful Russian Kovalev took advantage of the Welshman's careless tactics to floor the champion twice before forcing the stoppage.

Cleverly was never really in the fight, allowing Kovalev to land his heavy blows almost at will while firing back very little in return. He went down twice in the third round and was out on his feet when the session ended, before Kovalev pounced in the fourth, prompting referee Terry O'Connor to stop the contest.

While Kovalev's win was one-sided, Cleverly may be intelligent enough to learn from the defeat and make a better case next time. Warren, however, confirmed there was no rematch clause in the fight contract and was wary of demanding a shot at redemption for his 26-year-old fighter.

....Cleverly was a hype job to begin with....Sergey Kovalev Ko'ed him rather easily. Kovalev would of probably would of lost if it went to the score cards.

Why in the hell would they have a rematch...

this fight reminded me of cintron vs margs 1, where one guy had never really been tested and got blown out,,,,

Yet we did get margs-cintron 2 a few years later, so you never know,,,

i wouldnt mind seeing cleverly vs dawson

I'd still favor Cleverly against almost anyone in the top 10 at LHW. If he is a hype job, should the whole division just be abolished?

No one was hyping Cleverly for this match besides biased brits.... Cleverly had no shot in this match. None whatsoever, he was going to get steamrolled the moment this fight was made.

if Kovalev is the best fighter at 175 like I think he is, how can losing to him make you a bum? Stop being ******. Cleverly has got skills, you can watch him and tell. Problem is that gets thrown out the window when you fight Sergey. Campillo had skills and White had decent skills, but once you feel his power you start to run.

An immediate rematch would be a ****** move. Whilst I don't particularly like Frank Warren, I do trust his ability to judge the situation.

            Back to the drawing board.

Yep, that's the last we'll see of Cleverly in the ring with guys who've got a higher KO percentage than 40.

Back to the Shawn Hawks and Tommy Karpencys of the world.

I don't necessarily think so. Cleverly can take a good punch. He just need to wait for Kovalev to move up to CW! Haha.
