Comments Thread For: Berto's Surgery Goes Well, Won't Return Until 2014

(LOS ANGELES, CALIF.) - Andre Berto (Winter Haven, Fla.) underwent successful surgery with highly-respected physician, Dr. Neal ElAttrache, on Wednesday afternoon in Los Angeles to repair a ruptured subscapularis tendon in his right shoulder. Dr. ElAttrache declared the surgery a success following the three and a half hour operation, during which he discovered that Berto had completely torn the tendon from top to bottom.

During his post operative visit with Berto, he explained that the severity of the tear prevented him from being able to punch with any type of power with his right hand as well as fully lift his arm to protect himself from incoming punches. Berto is slated to begin rehabilitation in approximately six weeks and could resume boxing training in as soon as four months.

Good idea. Take a tune-up and fight a guy like Senchenko after Brook beats him.

Lately I have felt a lot of sympathy for Berto. The guy has been in some very fan-friendly fights. I wish him a speedy recovery, and I hope he is able to fight in another good scrap before his day is done.

Another very winnable fight for Andre would be Kermit Cintron. Do that on ESPN.

Damn, so he completely tore the tendon from top to bottom? Give the guy credit for continuing to fight like that.

I don't mind Berto making one more run at things. But if he fails again, though, it's his time to retire. I actually wouldn't mind him retiring now to prevent further punishment.

We gave it to him -- at least those of us who (during the fight) immediately understood that Berto had a big problem with his right shoulder as he completely gave up his right hand in the 4th round.

When he comes back next year, he needs a tune up fight first. If he loses that, then he has to retire for good. No way he'll come back from yet another loss. Even now it's pushing it after losing his last 3 out of 4. I'm not going to lie though, I'm glad he got KO'd in the 12th, because it looked like they were going to rob Karass when clearly he was winning the fight. Berto had a lot of heart to fight injured though.
