Comments Thread For: Photos: Abner Mares Putting in Work For Jhonny Gonzalez

HustleBoss.com/BoxingScene.com stepped inside of the Elite Mixed Martial Arts Academy in Santa Fe Springs, Calif. as WBC featherweight champion Abner Mares (26-0-1, 14 KO’s) boxed with junior lightweight prospect Luis Martinez ahead of his Aug. 24 clash with former champion Jhonny Gonzalez.

Mares faces off with Gonzalez in a Showtime attraction from the StubHub Center in nearby Carson in what will serve as the first defense of his new title.

Mares won his WBC bauble with a resounding 10th round TKO over Daniel Ponce De Leon this past May in Las Vegas after moving up in weight and has stamped himself as one of the rising stars in the sport. [Click Here To Read More]

Amir Khan's long-lost twin, but with a chin.

    Love this fight, btw.

Seriously though, they could not possibly ever be related. This guy's tough as nails - he just stands there grinning at his opponent, never seeming to get hurt even though he can eat a good clean shot. Crazy bastage.

Then again, the names Abner and Amir sound rather close.

I'm really impressed with the way Mares has improved over the last 2 years. He's a completely different fighter than the one that kept low blowing Abeko in their first fight.

For sure. He showed maturity and composure in the Morel, Moreno and De Leon fights, whilst not sacrificing any of his aggression. Love it! Never a boring fight with Mares around.
