Bad Move
Edwin was coming off a big win where he never looked better. He suffered no damage and seems to be peaking. Ward has been inactive and if the time was ripe for an upset, it could have been now. It looks like Edwin didn't like HBO looking at him as a B side opponent with an unlikely chance to win. Well, that's how HBO sees it but Edwin has to understand, you can't enter every fight as a favorite and this was a very good opportunity based on timing. And if he took it, and won, he basically creates a winning lottery ticket. If he loses but makes it exciting or close, he will still get dates and everyone will say he lost to the best in the world so it wouldn't hurt him at all. Unless he got out of shape in a hurry after Grachev, this appears to be a poor decision.Comment

I think HBO is realizing that you can have all the boxing skill and talent in the world but if you can't get people to watch then it doesn't really matter, especially when there is competing networks.
HBO hasn't done enough work to cultivate opponents. A network can't just put on fights with the same opponents over and over, especially for a fighter like ward who wins his fights in such dominating fashion.Comment

Rigondeaux is below a featherweight HBO doesn't like small guys anyway so Rigondeaux was always fighting an uphill battle, he doesn't bring sizzle, he doesn't speak English (and isn't Mexican or Puerto Rican which have larger built in fan bases) and he is already well into his thirties so how much can they really get out of him~ that is four strikes right there so why HBO doesn't want to invest in him isn't a mystery.
Rodriguez is a 168 pounder, HBO has a lot invested around that weight class and he is young so if he could hang with Ward they would likely bring him back as a b-side to build up someone else for Ward. Totally different situations~Last edited by The Gambler1981; 08-12-2013, 10:02 AM.Comment

What I don't get is why HBO didn't want to see Rodriguez vs Abraham or Kessler. Those would have been good fights.
It seems like they are playing hardball with everyone (except Zou Shiming.)Comment
