  • Comments Thread For: Martinez's Adviser: Golovkin Needs To Fight Curtis Stevens

Sampson Lewkowicz, the adviser to WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez, believes IBO/WBA champ Gennady Golovkin (27-0, 24KOs) needs to face a dangerous opponent like Curtis Stevens (25-3, 18KOs). Golovkin is scheduled to return on an HBO televised date of November 2, and Stevens has been mentioned as a possible candidate.

Since moving down to the middleweight division, Stevens has displayed deadly power. He crushed Saul Roman in the first round on Saturday night, and he immediately called for a fight with Golovkin. Martinez is still recovering from his win over Martin Murray in April. He suffered several injuries during the fight and won't return to action until the first quarter of 2014. [Click Here To Read More]

Enough is enough. And after Stevens who is it gonna be, Quillin? What are they gonna say, GGG needs to fight Quillin to see who becomes more known?

It's kinda the opposite of what Sampson says. Macklin, Barker, Chavez all came out of the Sergio fight looking better and more capable than thought going in. The first two were like 10-1 underdogs or worse, performed much better than that. And Chavez is suddenly looked as legit after years of being a sideshow

Do your job and "advise" Martinez not some other fighter.

Stevens just KOd a guy who's been KOd six times before now he's the one Golovkin should fight? Sorry, but I'd definitely favor the Geale/Barker winner as it would be a unification bout and much more meaningful. If no one else is available, then give Stevens a call.

Both GGG and Ward need opponents for later this year. Make it happen.

All I heard was blah blah blah duck...these guys... probably hoping and praying stevens ko's ggg...if ggg fights stevens and destroys him the martinez camp will be even more reluctant to ggg... and why is fighting murray not a good idea and fighting stevens is??? Because ggg will destroy murray (not as easily as he did macklin I would assume) and murray gave martinez the fight of his life, thus making martinez accomplishments less impressive. I really like martinez but he dont want ggg..ggg would retire martinez

Lewkowicz is full of it. GGG did very good numbers with HBO for the Macklin fight. Sergio will have to fight him by the end of next year and it will be a big event.

As far as Stevens, it's funny that after so many setbacks he's so close to a title shot because he's challenged a guy most others don't want to fight. I'm a fan of Stevens so I don't want him to be ruined by GGG but this is the opportunity fighters dream of. He might as well take advantage of it in his prime because it may not come again. At least he has a puncher's chance.

**** that...why is trying to fight murray a mistake for golovkin? if anything, murray's confidence is at all time high after his fight with martinez. he may not be declared the winner but one can argue that he beat martinez. he didn't suffer any physical or psychological decline in that fight.

martinez's camp are just worried that golovkin might beat murray easily and then there'll be no more excuse not to make a martinez-golovkin fight. i'm not even that too excited about that fight anymore after seeing how martinez had greatly declined in his fight against murray.
