Winky always kept his hands up,, so does floyd,, whitaker would usually,,, they seem to be able to get the hands up on the inside and have them down at range because they have great footwork,,, great footwork is a common link between great defenders..
Winly Wright and Joshua Clotty were defensive boxers par excellence. they both carried their hands high. When Roy Jones slowed down and was in defence mode he carried his hands high. As did many others. It all depends I suppose on how you're taught, and how you react to teaching, also your reflexes and your attacking instincts. Even whilst you are rolling and deflecting punches you must have that hunting eye out for a possible scoring shot.

Inside fighting is a real art and not many do it today. When I was boxing I was taught that when in close, it was a matter of getting my arms inside my opponents, forcing his arms out, leaving his body open for attack. So there was a lot of nudging, arm and elbow pushing out (not to the throat-that was a D) just to spread his arms and then you could go to work.
