Eddie Chambers’ promoter was looking for opponents for him, to no avail.
They eventually found one, though. His foe for the Aug. 3 broadcast of NBC Sports Network’s “Fight Night” had no issue with facing the former heavyweight title challenger, who is making his cruiserweight debut.
“Thabiso Mchunu’s people asked for this fight,” said Kathy Duva of Main Events on a July 24 media conference call. “When that happens, you know you’re going to have yourself a really nice competitive contest. It’s wonderful to see this guy stepping up and taking on a challenge like Eddie Chambers.”
Others had no interest, according to Jolene Mizzone, the matchmaker for Main Events.
“They don’t want to fight him at heavyweight. I think at cruiserweight now it’s even harder, because people know the skills that Eddie has, [and] now being at the weight that he probably should’ve been at, he’s going to be faster, he’s going to be stronger at that weight.”
