Comments Thread For: Dawson's Trainer Disagrees With Stevenson Stoppage

Eddie Mustafa Muhammad, the trainer of former champion Chad Dawson (31-3, 17KOs), was irate after referee Michael Griffin stopped Dawson's fight with Adonis Stevenson (21-1, 18KOs) in the first round. During the June match, which took place at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Dawson was clipped early in the first round. He went down hard, made it up on wobbly legs, and the referee felt Dawson was too damaged to be allowed to continue.

Sour g****s. Eddie is to be commended for standing up for his fighter, but Dawson was toast. One more head shot from Stevenson could have permanently scrambled his brains. Good stoppage.

If a guy can't take literally the first punch a guy throws in the first round, no way does he survive if he was allowed to go on. That would be expecting a fighter to never get hit once the rest of the fight with the same punch and that is not reasonable. Dawson couldn't take Ward's "power". No way was he going to hold up against Stevenson's.

WOW, he's just trying to safe face and keep himself on Dawson's payroll. Dawson was very hurt. he didn't even have the energy or brain power to bring up his gloves, let alone continue. He could've gotten severely hurt and probably ruined his entire career (worse than he already has), it was a good stoppage IMO.

I like Dawson and thought that was a great stoppage.

I wonder what Dawson's 150 other ex trainers have to say.

Not only was Dawson supposed to be counted out for that fight, I believe that for his next fight, the ref should begin the fight with a standing 8 count.

Were we watching the same fight? Some things are better left alone. As a boxing fan, I have lost some degree of respect for E.M.Muhammad. Chad's safety should be your primary concern. I am disappointed.
