  • Would you take three of your friends to see a Rigo fight?

I’m a “real” boxing fan and I enjoy watching Rigondeaux box. He puts on a master class in the ring. It was amazing to see what he did against Nonito. But would I have paid $400 to take three of my good friends to see it, let alone paying air fare to fly out to New York for it?

I can take my friends to a Brandon Rios fight or a Tim Bradley fight or a Nonito Donaire fight and tell them they’re going to see a good main event. I took three people to see Bradley-Provodnikov because I knew the kind of fighter Bradley was. He doesn’t run away from people, he takes them on and fights back. That fight turned out to be much better than anybody could have expected.

I went with three of my friends to see Brandon Rios vs Mike Alvarado II at the Mandalay Bay in Vegas this year after we all saw their first battle at the Home Depot Center a year before. This time they bought my ticket and took care of all the travel arrangements. They’re casual fans of the sport but seeing Bam Bam and Mile High Mike go at it made them want to pay to see more of it. We’ll probably all go to the third fight together too.

If Guillermo Rigondeaux was fighting at the Home Depot Center, would I take three people with me to see him? No way!! Rigondeaux takes the safest way to win every fight. He would always rather counter than lead. He would always rather back up or circle around than stand his ground and make something happen. He is content with getting a slight advantage out of every exchange; he never tries to go for more. I don’t want to explain to three people who paid money to see some fights that Rigondeaux’s controlling and measured style really makes him the Best Boxer Ever, they won’t care if the fight is **** to watch.

If I’d be reluctant to take three people to see him at HDC (now StubHub Center) which is 30 minutes away from us, there’s no way in hell I’ll be traveling with anybody to see him either. Nonito Donaire or Abner Mares might be the two exceptions but even then I’d be there because it’s those guys who make exciting fights happen. Rigondeaux’s fights are not exciting, and his style encourages minimal action which makes good fighters look bad.

HBO has no reason to show any Rigondeaux fight that isn’t against an A-level fighter. A-level fighters have no reason to fight Rigondeaux because he doesn’t sell tickets and will make them look bad. Casual fans will have no interest in seeing Rigondeaux run around B-level bantamweights. You can’t be a professional fighter if people don’t want to pay to see you fight. It doesn’t matter how great or talented you are.

Would you guys pay ticket money to take three of your casual boxing friends to see Rigo fight? Do you think they would enjoy the experience?

I wouldn't take anyone to a boxing fight that I didn't know was a hardcore fan already. Which pretty much means I only go with people from my gym. But myself, I would go to any Rigo fight if I could, I am a student of the craft, and Rigo is simply magnificent.

I don't know any hardcore fans, and I don't think I'd enjoy going to a fight alone. So whenever I go to a fight card, I end up inviting (and usually buying the ticket for) a few of my friends who would definitely fall into "casual fans." They only follow the sport through me and won't go out of their way to watch an average HBO fight, but they still show up for fight parties and go out to bars for the big events.

I couldn't imagine taking any of them to a Rigo fight, maybe one guy who is a martial artist himself and would appreciate Rigo's technique. Even then he would have to be taking on the right fighter.

Let's face it, Rigo is only appreciated by us purists, the goal is to hit and don't be hit, and as Foreman said, "boxing is like jazz, the better it is, the less people appreciate it."

So you'd invite three of your friends to go see him with you?
