Congratulations to Manny Pacquiao on one of the most impressive wins I've seen in a while. I thought he was getting slaughtered by the middle of the thing but round 6 turned it all around for him.
But of course there's always room for improvement in a fighter's game...so what do people think Manny has to work on after seeing the fight on Saturday? A few things come to mind for me:
- Defensive footwork. When facing a Morales onslaught Paq would usually step back rather tentatively, or sometimes, oddly enough, it looked like he was stepping into it. His chin and his improved ability to block shots helped him, but he can't necessarily rely on that to save him every time out.
- Consistency. Paq used the jab and the right hook quite well in the early going, then appeared to abandon them completely, only to get back into form later on to dominate the rest of the way. Better to cut out those lapses and not lose the rounds.
- Jabbing. Paq was better using it but was still not all that great. In the later rounds he was relying more on hooks and lefts to wear down Morales. An opponent with a bit more life will need to be worked more carefully.
Anyway, just my thoughts.
