Three and a half years ago rising Russian light heavyweight Igor Michalkin barely got past tough Frenchman Doudou N’Gumbu (then 20-1) over eight rounds with a majority decision. Michalkin (10-0 before that fight), 24 at the time, was on his way up and was considered a prodigy worth looking at – specifically, after having a banner year in 2009… He lost his unbeaten record and his steam with it in the very next fight, dropping a UD 10 to Aleksy Kuziemski. After two years off he made a barely visible comeback and won two fights over non-descript opposition. Meanwhile, N’Gumbu had a roller coaster ever since but managed to win big over former world title challenger Vyacheslav Uzelkov in March to get high rankings with WBO #4, WBA #13 and IBF#14 positions with the WBO I/C title too.
