Manny Pacquiao Would Fight Floyd Mayweather, But Not Canelo Alvarez!
Manny Pacquiao
There are two completely opposing world views on a potential showdown between Manny Pacquiao and Floyd Mayweather Jr. People on one side of the aisle insist that the one-time dream match isn’t a viable possibility because the bout no longer features the two best pound-for-pounders on the planet. The folks on the side of the aisle insist that doesn’t matter.
Who is right? Well, consider this: whereas people are still talking about a possible fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao, nobody is talking about one between Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez and Pacquiao.
What does that tell you? It tells you that this isn’t about determining who the world’s best fighter is – that’s why there is no clamoring for a Canelo vs. Pacquiao showdown. If it were, then folks would say that Pacquiao should take on the winner of Mayweather vs. Alvarez. No, this is about settling a grudge years in the making. Regardless of whether Pacquiao and Mayweather are at the top of their games boxing-wise or not, that’s still a selling point.

The idea of Pacquiao and Mayweather fighting to settle the argument of who boxing’s best was ceased being a factor a long time ago. Pacquiao’s decline was apparent in his last two wins prior to the controversial Timothy Bradley loss. His inability to put Bradley away, despite the fact that he was pretty much schooling him from start to finish, spoke volumes. Similarly, Mayweather’s iffy showing against Miguel Cotto showed that he was no longer at the top of his game either.
But them fighting isn’t about that. It’s about taking the two most recognizable brands in the sport, the two most rabid fan bases around, and allowing them to face off for bragging rights. Not for titles. Not for a historically significant win or loss. For bragging rights – nothing more, nothing less.
Will it happen in 2014? Maybe, if both win out. But even if it doesn’t, it won’t be because “nobody wants to see it anymore.”
