Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Continues To Advise Canelo on Floyd's Flaws

Golden Boy Promotions President Oscar De La Hoya has continued to advise WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) on what he needs to do in order to beat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. De La Hoya fought Mayweather in 2007 and came very close to snapping Floyd's unbeaten streak. Mayweather won by way of a twelve round split decision.

Didn't Oscar advise Hatton, Marquez, Mosley, Ortiz and Guerrerro on how to defeat Mayweather also?

25 seconds of each round huh? Man Floyd must be paying off a lot of judges to still be on the winning sides of fights if he's only fighting 25 seconds per round.

To be fair, none of the above has one punch KO power aside from a roided Marquez

Canelo is a strong puncher to be sure but I don't understand why so many have the impression that he's a one punch KO artist either. Anyone believing that he's likely to knock Floyd out with a single punch (or single combination of punches) hasn't watched Canelo's fights closely. Canelo's knockouts are accumulative - he's not the super welterweight Mike Tyson.

It's even harder to buy into the KO hype after watching the Trout fight. Yes, he put Trout on the canvas, but Trout was able to get up and win the rest of the round because Canelo was already sapped of energy by the middle of the fight despite his low work rate. Trout is bigger than Floyd, but if Canelo couldn't hurt a fighter who he knew had no firepower, and find the energy to try to finish him off when he knocked him down, how is he going to deal with Floyd?

In any case, I don't care how much power you have: going into a fight looking for one shot, particularly against a skilled defensive fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr., is sort of like going into the MGM Grand and betting everything you have on a single hand of blackjack. You could win, but it's more likely you're going to walk out of the casino looking really dumb. Hopefully Canelo is smarter than his KO-seeking fans.

Canelo's biggest problem is he doesn't have a good jab and doesn't jab much. He did jab a bit vs Trout but it was a slow heavy jab and if he throws that at Floyd he will get countered
