Comments Thread For: Photos: Frankie Gavin Breaks Vassell's Jaw To Win Crown

Frankie Gavin added the Commonwealth welterweight title to his British belt with an impressive seventh-round stoppage of Denton Vassell in Liverpool.

The Birmingham southpaw extended his unbeaten record to 16 fights, with 12 inside the distance, and ended Vassell's at 20 after leaving the Mancunian with a suspected broken jaw.

Vassell had defended his Commonwealth title three times in his three-year reign, the most recent against the previously undefeated Ronnie Heffron last November, but had no answers tonight in the face of a blistering performance from 27-year-old Gavin.

The British champion dominated the opening three rounds but was forced back onto the ropes in the fifth as Vassell briefly came into the bout.

Great win for Frankie. He's not the most exciting to watch but gets the job done. Time to move to euro/fringe world level now

They didn't even show one of the punches that broke his jaw. Vassel could not get away from Gavin's Straight left. He pooped him with it about 10 times HARD in the first round. Vassel looked like he was in slow motion, but he put forth a game effort. He was in excellent shape, just too slow. Gavin is going to be world champ

Wouldn't have surprised me if the break was caused by one oif the numerous accidental headbutts rather than by a punch. Good performance by Frankie though, made DV look amateurish at times.

That was a solid, impressive performance by Frankie Gavin.
