I was thinking about the brutal Lebedev vs Guillermo Jones fight recently again. First of all, I hope Lebedev's eye is fine again and that he can come back. Him winning those rounds with only one eye was one of the most unbelievable things I ever saw in a ring. He kept coming, outboxing and outpunching Jones with only one eye.
Okay and here is my "philosophical" standpoint: Lebedev was making it a habit to fight old, past prime legends like Roy Jones and James Toney to get good names on his record. And we all know Lebedev is a pretty damn good fighter but at the same time we know Toney and Roy were legends. So - a guy making a name for himself by beating up old, "helpless" fighters leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Always did.
Danny Green did the same thing in Australia until he ran into Tarver. These guys ship legends like Roy Jones to their country and celebrate the hometown hero as if he just beat a prime Muhammad Ali.
So I think about how Lebedev beat Roy Jones, then Toney and then he wanted to have another supposedly "winable" fight against another "old" past his prime "good" or even "great" fighter named Guillermo Jones. But this time it didn't work. Fate didn't allow it.
Guillermo Jones still had that chin, that toughness and that heart, something Lebedev didn't expect.
