Same can be said for Mayweather
Oscars name and PPV built him haha

Alvarez built a good following knocking out stiffs in his hometown and selling tickets ranging from $10 for the nosebleed section to $350 (the minimum price for Mayweather/Alvarez ticket) for a ringside seat to the Trout fight. The reason he did it is because guys like Mayweather, Oscar De La Hoya, Pacquiaio, Felix Trinidad and Ricky Hatton made the lower weights popular in terms of attendance and PPV numbers. When Mayweather was 22, the heavyweight division was the only division that drew huge crowds and large PPV numbers. So, Alvarez owes his current popularity not only to Mayweather, but to a number of others who preceded him and made the lower weights popular on PPV broadcasts.
In terms of his drawing power, people in Mexico do not pay for PPVs and I guarantee you Alvarez couldn't have sold 100,000 ppvs in the U.S.for an Alvarez/Robert Guerrerro fight, let alone the 1 million ppvs (or even Fat Dan's manufactured number of 825,000 that the haters choose to believe) sold for Mayweather/Guerrerro.
The numbers speak for themselves. The Alvarez fight will be Mayweather's 11th PPV event 45 fights, all since 2005. It will be Alvarez's first PPV event in 43 fights.Last edited by big_james10; 06-27-2013, 07:08 PM.
