the catchweight thing is about hypocrisy, not principle
in present context, there's nothing else to criticize Floyd for
beating Alvarez won't satisfy people because he's not that good
but Floyd has no other opponents now, so why complain?
no way he'll go through JMW, it's too late and not lucrative
WW has nothing for him, JWW's can move up though
Floyd's critics bash him for stuff in the past, and rightfully so
he ducked the 3 guys people really wanted him to fight
people aren't letting him off the hook for it, and they shouldn't

I agree, that Floyd should not have asked for a catchweight. What he should have done is told Canelo if he wanted the fight then CANELO should fight him at FLOYD'S comfortable weight (147). People talk like Floyd isn't the undefeated, undisputed, pound-for-pound BEST fighter on the planet. Floyd doesn't owe Canelo, Manny, Martinez, JMM, or Bradley nothing! They need him, not the other way around.

        You're confused.

This is a thread about Floyd wanting credit for his achievements, for his legacy. Dragging a fighter down a weight class denigrates that. Just like Ward's win over Dawson has a giant asterisk. Just like Pacquiao's win over De La Hoya has a giant asterisk. If Floyd brought Canelo down to 147, the victory would have been meaningless as he'd have drained a kid down 7lbs to make him much weaker.

Now if Floyd wins there is a small asterisk - the 152. It's pointless. If Mayweather is that good, the 2lbs does not matter. If it does matter, then Mayweather is not the all time greatest ever fighter that he proclaims himself to be. The fact that he spent years publicly criticizing Pacquiao for doing this to Cotto/Margarito only makes it worse. The guy is a hypocrite.

He's not a fraud though. This is a dangerous fight for Mayweather and if he wins it's a big win and a legacy enhancing one. If he'd have taken it at 147, it would not have been.

The reason you are confused is you are confusing negotiating power with legacy building. Sure, Mayweather could negotiate some really disgusting terms and win it outside the ring. Sure, he could fight bums, because he's a PPV attraction and people will tune in anyway. That's not going to help him get credit for his accomplishments though.

Nothing else to add. Mayweather screwed himself.

If you look at all the greats in boxing, you will see fights they fought where they were the underdog. Mayweather only takes fights he is sure he will win.
So the critics/boxing fans will not give him credit till til this changes.

Back in Nov 2011, just after the Citron fight, Canelo stated to the BLH that he would go down to 150 for Floyd:

"It's what I want, the Mayweather fight. We put it on the table. It was a year of great experience, and I feel more mature. I'm willing to go down to 150 pounds. De La Hoya said he was going to try to make the Mayweather fight. We're ready for it."

The actual problem, now, is that Canelo is still growing and can't make even 154...

This comment is exactly how I'd sum him up!
Totally agreed, this is what is wrong with boxing today this guys meant to be a damn role model to younger people yet he does all these really bad things.

No wonder society is so ****ed up today, we leave kids to their own devices to turn into a good human being because the so called role models i.e. Kim Kardashian (sl*t) Kanye West (pr*ck) Lil Wayne (junkie scumbag) then the list goes on and on!
If you grow up to be a nice person you've clearly done something alot of other people haven't done.
