Comments Thread For: Photos: Sakio Bika Finally Lands The World Championship

Barclays Center, Brooklyn - The fourth time was the charm for veteran Sakio Bika, as he outlasted Marco Antonio Periban for the vacant WBC super middleweight title, winning a 12 round majority decision to become a world champion after three failed tries against Joe Calzaghe, Lucian Bute, and Andre Ward. Scores were 116-112, 115-113, and 114-114 for Bika, now 32-5-2 with 21 KOs; Periban suffers his first pro defeat, falling to 20-1 with 13 KOs.

I'm very proud of Sakio Bika, I know its a paper title against some dude ill admit I didnt know but the business of boxing is not a kind one. Its real hard to actually make a fruitful living as a boxer and no offense to Bika but solid although not great fighters like him usually have a limit on how far they can go in there career.

For him to have his moment last night, in a major American city, on a major show in front of a crowd that included more then 9500 people, and finally hold up a major recognized world title like the WBC belt, I cant help but be happy for him. I know no one cares about it but I do cound the IBO title as a major title especially since te other major four as just a shady if not more.

I think his journyman/gatekeeper career is now complete, hes faced the best in the world, won 750,000 dollars by winning the contender, and now he can call himself world champion

I didn't score it but I thought the mexican won.

This was definately the best fight of the night.

It's sad because I was so pumped after this fight and then the mitchell banks fight put me right to sleep lol.

There was talk from DeGale's camp that he would like to face the winner of lastnights fight. That is a fight i'd be interested in seeing.

Cong**** to both fighters for an excellent fight. Cong**** to Bika (I had him losing 7-5 in tight fight) but neither is close to top 10 at 168 lbs. Bika vs James DeFraud would be must -not-see-tv . This was a another WBC joke as Ward is the WBC Champion, period.

Why was Ward stripped of the belt anyways?

It looks like Bika was just swinging his body to propel his arms forward for a looping punch for most of the fight. I saw no skill in Bikas punches. He will lose against a better opponent.
