Comments Thread For: Frank Warren Discusses Cleverly-Kovalev, Broner, More

It was a huge relief to finally confirm a genuine world grade challenger WBO light-heavyweight champion Nathan Cleverly this week.

On 17th August the 26 year old Welshman squares up to unbeaten Russian prospect Sergey Kovalev at the Motorpoint Arena in Cardiff. It is a match that has already gripped the trade on both sides of the Atlantic.

Komrade Sergey certainly represents a significant step up in terms of both quality and profile for ‘Clev’. Now based in Florida, the Russian has been given the big build up by both his influential promoters Main Events and the NBC TV network over in the US.

His credentials are beyond reproach. A former Russian amateur champion and World Military gold medallist, Kovalev was victorious in 193 of his 215 amateur bouts. Since shedding his headguard and singlet five years ago, he has gone unbeaten in 22 as a pro, with 19 stoppage wins and 18 victims falling inside three rounds.

Big respect to Clev for taking this fight. This is the sort of challengers that a world title holder should be fighting.

If you read the article or knew the facts, you'd understand why. Cleverly has had some big fights not happen through no fault of his own.

It doesn't matter anyway, he still deserves huge respect for taking on this fight when he doesn't even have to.

Cleverly would fight anyone but when you are a fighter promoted by Frank warren then it's very difficult to get him to let you run your career the way you think you should, cleverly doesn't have a lot to gain by taking this fight. He couldn't have gone after Hopkins, cloud or Adonis because losing to them isn't that much a career wise risk, here he would be fighting a dangerous fighter who is a known puncher but a fighter that doesn't bring that much money or fame to the table. Losing this fight can be detrimental to cleverly's career and there is a reason why Hopkins side-step Kovalev (Mandatory) to fight someone else.

If he wants to break America on at least get on HBO, then it appears he had to.

If he wants to be considered a real threat to the division, then he has to. As Frank said, if he wins, he will be in the LHW limelight.

Maybe some refused to fight him, but Frank always wants home town advantage and also didn't look for Dawson. Or he calls out Froch etc.. from a lower weight. I recall Clev wanting Hopkin's who was beaten by Dawson. The team or was it him pretty much expressed that they were not ready for Dawson.

I always have this opinion. If you hold a title, then there should not be respect for facing someone who can ****/feared. It is your job to take on the best.

HBO were televising his fight on August 17th before Kovalev was even confirmed as the opponent and there are far less dangerous but still known opponents.

Warren agreed for Cleverly to fight Hopkins in New York but he went on to fight Cloud instead so its not even Warren's fault (for a change!). Dawson would never have fought Clev - he was chasing the money with Ward at 168.

Yeah it should be your job but not a lot of fighters do it. This is a high risk, low reward choice. Kovalev is a huge puncher but isn't THAT well known and he could easily be labelled a hypejob if Clev beats him.

I was shocked when Cleverly took this fight. Credit to him. That said, Kovalev can really punch, and Cleverly's defense is leaky. Intriguing match-up...
