Caleb Truax had his biggest win to date tonight on friday night fights. In front of his hometown friends and family he picked apart Don George and ko’ed him in the sixth round.
While not too many may think much of it, it is a very big not just for Truax but for the state of Minnesota in general – which is in dire need of winners in the boxing ring to revive the state.
Minnesota was, at one time a century ago, perhaps the biggest and best boxing hub in the nation. Nowadays you take a look around the landscape and……well actually you do not even have to look at the fighters, just look at the number of boxing cards put on in the state. This is the first televised one of the year! In fact, I can’t think of a televised card from Minnesota unless you go back a couple years to a shobox card.
The state needs someone to look up to, and perhaps it is now Truax who looked the sharpest and best to date against a guy who is no pushover.
Lets hope that Minnesota can rally behind Truax and rise him up to a draw inside the state. Why? Simple: to revive boxing in a state that was a hub for it at one time. Its in the blood of Minnesota – so lets get it pumping again.
Here is my round by round recap:
Truax got off to a great start – blasting George starting midway through the first round. He could not miss with right hands and hurt him, following up with body shots and more right hands.
After a more calm second round Truax started blasting George with right hands again in the third. He caught him in the corner and unloaded well timed shots (landing 23/35 power) to Georges head, hurting him. George was tough as usual though making it through the onslaught with no lingering effects so far.
The fourth and fifth rounds had Truax picking his man off more yet and again putting in work to the body that now was showing a different George – as he covered up his midsection, wincing at times in pain.
In the sixth round it was all over as Truax hurt his man early on and then waited patiently until he landed a perfect right hand behind Georges ear while he had him pinned against the ropes, putting him down hard and for good. It was a great showing for Truax – to me he looked the best he has yet against a pretty good fighter in George. Perhaps he rose to the occasion on his home turf in front of his family and friends.
