I'm sure he made an honest effort to lose the weight and he killed himself doing it, especially in the last week or so. But he rehydrated 16 pounds over the weight class limit when the maximum reasonable amount is usually around 10. Being sick for a couple days does not excuse this. This means he was pretty damn irresponsible in his time off, which matters just as much as the training camp as far as weight is concerned. It's like having 3 months to write a 40 page research paper. You completely blow the first two months, starting working on it on the last month, and the final week comes and you've only written 5 pages. Then you absolutely kill yourself in the last week pulling all nighters and working on the paper 24/7 to try to finish, but still come up short of the 40 page requirement. Should the professor give you leniency for working super duper hard in the last week? Fuck no. Your responsibility was to work on it during the entire 3 months, not to kill yourself in the last week.
If boxing is what you do for a living, you should be in reasonable shape all the time even during your off time. It's your damn job to stay in shape. If you're dehydrating 16 pounds, god knows how much weight you packed on between your last fight. It's ridiculous.
