Comments Thread For: Jose Luis Castillo: Canelo Can Defeat Mayweather

The man who many believe did enough to defeat Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) on April 20, 2002 - Mexico's Jose Luis Castillo - believes WBC/WBA junior middleweight champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs) can do enough to unseat the pound-for-pound king on September 14th at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. It won't be easy and Castillo says the 22-year-old champion will have to use the right tactics.

"I did everything humanly possible to win that day, and I think I won the fight," Castillo said. "I demonstrated, I believe, that Mayweather was not invincible, but he is a great fighter. He is very complete, good stamina, fast. I think he should be in the top five in the world in boxing history." [Click Here To Read More]

The Alfonso Gomez fight is a testament to this.

        Floyd is not Alfonso Gomez.

Funny how some forget (Castillo himself) that Floyd went into the first Castillo fight with an injury. In the second fight between Floyd and Castillo, Floyd completely dominated Castillo. So if Castillo is referring to the injured Floyd then yes, Canelo can put pressure on Floyd. A healthy Floyd is too much for anyone. By the way, a lot of folks (myself included) felt Floyd beat Castillo the first time they met.

            1. Castillo fought dirty against Mayweather in their first fight and the ref allowed it.He was leteraly holding him and punching but the the ref did not stamp his authority.
            2. Mayweather was injured.
            3. if he really had a solution why did it not work the second time arround. I mean Ken Notton gave Ali everytime and so did fraizer.

I like how people say Mayweather beat Castillo easily in the 2nd fight when in reality the scorecards were closer than the 1st time. I'm never gonna stop saying that Castillo Should've won that 1st fight and in the 2nd fight he let the fight go away in the last couple of rounds. The best version of Castillo would've given Mayweather problems every time they'd face.

People have been pulling excuses for Floyd on that fight since before it even happened.

                Facts:

                1. Floyd did not want to fight Castillo, he was forced to and it started the collapse with Arum. Even Floyd's trainer is on record stating they did not like the matchup and did not want the fight.

                2. What was Floyd's injury? Because he only became injured after people ringside started saying he should've lost that fight..how convenient.

                3. Saying what happened in the second fight somehow nulls out any debate about the first fight is complete and utter noob logic. Castillo was never the same fighter mentally after he felt he was robbed in that fight. He isn't the first of last fighter to completely never recoup from taking a controversial loss.

Now as a fan of the sport, I have seen that first fight over and over again. Only truly blind fanboys can say that first fight was not debatable and had Mayweather been anyone else he in all likelihood would not have walked out of there with the win. Here is another interesting bit, the only other challenger to floyd with an unorthodox fight style that didn't give away reach advantage to Floyd was Paul Williams and because of that Floyd never fought Paul...interesting...now please give me an excuse as to why Floyd wouldn't fight Paul. I'll give you ten reasons why he refused to fight him.

Why do people love talking about this ****** fight. He beat the guy twice. The first fight can be argued but the 2nd fight is a clear victory.

Can Canelo sustain a 12 round effort against Mayweather?

Because that is what it is going to take.

Real pressure. All the way through. The championship rounds are going to be key.

Floyd isn't the fighter he was at those weight classes. Not physically.

But mentally, he has seen it just about all since the Castillo fight.

                    Bet on Canelo, though.
