Comments Thread For: Golden Boy, SHO Plan Huge Mayweather-Canelo Promotion

Golden Boy Promotions, Mayweather Promotions and Showtime - are finalizing the details of the massive press tour to promote the fall junior middleweight mega-match between pound-for-pound king Floyd Mayweather Jr. (44-0, 26KOs) and WBC/WBA champion Saul "Canelo" Alvarez (42-0-1, 30KOs). Both Golden Boy and Showtime confirm that Mayweather-Canelo will have the biggest pre-fight promotion in the history of either company.

"It's the biggest fight for any network since De La Hoya-Mayweather," said Stephen Espinoza, Vice President of Showtime Sports, to BoxingScene.com. "Unquestionably its the biggest fight that can be made. The two most popular fighters, as far as at the top of the sport. People are obviously very excited."

I love it when Oscar says they are the two most popular athletes in the sport.

Delusional moron, Oscar always spouts crap. He doesn't have 2/3rds the drawing power of Mayweathers arch nemesis Pacquaio.

Correct me if I'm wrong but didn't both Oscar and Floyd both participate in the fight that broke ppv records? Don't remember pacquiao ever being close to that.

You are confused. I'm saying Canelo is not the 2nd biggest draw in boxing, not even close compared to Pacquaio.

I'm not comparing Mayweather to Pacquaio, just Canelo.

Good. Hopefully they learned from their mistake from Mayweather-Guerrero. People need to talk about a fight before they buy it.

                  This fight dont need promotion!!!!!
This is the best fight boxing can put out as of right now.
Those who think pacman is bigger then canelo now are either his fans or dont know boxing.

the funny thing is fight could still lose money. so they might not want to spend too much on the promotion.

I think 1.5 million is a fair estimate for this fight.

at 1. million buys = that's about $100 million with a 60-40 split between $70 and $60 buys. but half of that 100 million goes to cable and satellite providers.

so $50 million from the PPV and at the very least 10 million from the live gate.

$60 is a lot of money but with Mayweather contract it might not be enough.

Frobes is saying Mayweather might make around 50 million alone, that's his 32 million minimum guarantee plus the profit share of the PPV. if he does make that much it doesn't leave much left.

think about it 10 million or so for Canelo's purse, the undercard purse and this "huge promotion" all together.

I know they'll make money from overseas outlets but it's only a fraction when compaired to the PPV buys and the live gate earnings.

Showtime made a huge gamble on giving Mayweather such a ridiculous contract and might lose money on every Mayweather fight.
