    I don't agree....

None of us were around at the time....

Who's to say that todays punchers couldn't punch like those back then...?

If anything, today's quote un quote punchers would spark the majority of the guys back then....

A lot of those guys were part-time and we have athletes truly dedicated to their sport now days with advances in medicine and supplements....

I definitely feel with the change from 15 to 12 round fights, the KO% and amount of power punchers have increased a lot. There's more viability to punchers, which means we're seeing more of them, which means that the curve is raised.

I'm not surprised if current day fighters are more heavy-handed than the fighters of old.

Paulie Malignaggi punches harder than Sugar Ray Robinson . joking.

It's true, and with increase in science, medicine and supplements they are fitter then fighters of the past.

The "old days" to you is like yesterday to me. Leonard was a big puncher, but his advantage was that he was suddenly explosive. The genuine old days contained many fighters who were terrific punchers then but who might be considered just heavy punchers today. Not because of training or anything like that, I believe that the old saying is true, that "punchers are born not made".

An important point might be that they used much lighter gloves, which had far less padding, and might have heavier punches. But also in those days (and we sometimes see it today) boxers fought so often that it was very common for them to go into the fight with an injury which prevented them from being at their best. So often there would be a points decision rather than a stoppage.

So there are pros and cons.... I've decided not to decide......

I disagree, punchers can be made to an extent, not saying you can become a Mike Tyson or Tommy Hearns but with the right technique and training you can pack quite a wallop. In the end you only need 3lbs of pressure to break someones jaw, so ts more about landing a solid, clean shot than anything. Back in the day the guys were better punchers simply because they were more skilled. In the end the more you throw a punch, the more natural it will become, the more natural it is the faster, sharper and more explosive it'll be. Supplements and 'advanced' nutrition can only do so much, it's all skill. Go watch Mike Tyson, Tommy Hearns and just look at how beautiful and accurate their punches were. Neither of them did weights in their prime and ate a simple clean diet.

The sports science aspect of boxing is integral, but unfortunately we don't have the trainers and teachers like the old days

Big punchers are BORN! Heavy punchers exsist when balance and technique are in harmony. The teachers today don't teach digging your toes into the canvas and pivoting so hips, shoulders and pronation are involved in a power punch!!! So it doesn't occur as often as years gone by!!! If you watch GGG you will see some of the older school forms in action.

Ray Leonard was NOT considered a heavy puncher, Rays ko & tko results came from combination punching and a solid attack with a high rate of punches!!

You can add some power with technique and conditioning & strength programs but it can't bring a good puncher into the great puncher realm. Its not that easy because its genetics more than anything else! Ray
